My old portfolio website was very much overkill. I made it about six years ago as a junior in college. I built it with react and materialUI. The hosting software was google cloud on firebase. The premise of firebase was that there was a low barrier of entry to web development. After one tutorial I saw how easy it was to go from nothing to a live site.
Problems
With the level of ease I started spamming new sites with React. After deploying my portfolio site it quickly started to decay with how difficult it was to maintain. I did all those deployments on a computer I don't have anymore so I haven't been able to update that site in years.
What I should have done
I really just need something like wix or squarespace where any thought that comes to my head is acted on instantly.
What went right
At the time React was cool and I needed to use it everywhere. It was still a good experince because it was practice at the end of the day.
Conclusion
Practice whenever possible and use the most simple tool.
